STS-119: LH2 leak during tanking postpones launch to March 15

STS-119′s opening launch attempt has been scrubbed until Sunday, March 15,, following a LH2 leak during tanking. The leak related to a carrier plate that is attached to the intertank area of the ET, with attempts to cycle the associated valve to reduce the leak to acceptable proving to be unsuccessful.

STS-119: L-2 MMT pre-empt OMS issue via Discovery’s previous flight

Engineers are currently working no serious issues with the Discovery, as the Mission Management Team (MMT) sailed through L-2 ahead of STS-119′s opening launch attempt on Wednesday. The main topic of conversation related to an issue with Discovery’s OMS (Orbital Maneuvering System) Engine Gimbal Controller during her previous flight, STS-124.

STS-119: Discovery enters launch countdown – crew arrives at KSC

Following the Flight Readiness Review (FRR) approval for launch, and the arrival of the STS-119 crew,  Discovery has entered the launch countdown (S0007) at 7pm local time Sunday evening. The three day countdown is targeting a 9:20pm launch of Discovery on Wednesday evening.

Delta II launches with Kepler Planet-Finder Launch

The Delta II launch team at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station have launched NASA’s new Kepler observatory, a telescope designed to search for Earth-like terrestrial planets in the Cygnus and Lyra constellations. The initial three and half year mission launched at 10:49pm. EST from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

FRR clears STS-119 for March 11 launch, pending SRB resolution

As expected, the Flight Readiness Review (FRR) has cleared Discovery to target a launch at 9:20pm on March 11, following a final review of the Flow Control Valve (FCV) flight rationale. One constraint – relating to the left SRB (Solid Rocket Booster) Range Safety System – will be worked over the weekend.

Orion opts for Hybrid Lite comms system due to mass/power issues

Lockheed Martin have recommended a switch of a 8Mbs Phased array on its Communications and Tracking (C&T) system to a combination phased array S-Band at low data rates with a High Gain Antenna – called Hybrid “Lite” – due to Orion’s mass and power issues.

PRCB boosts FRR opportunity to approve March launch for STS-119

Members of a Special PRCB (Program Requirements Control Board) meeting on Wednesday have once again worked through a vast set of documentation, which concluded with positive results for STS-119′s Flow Control Valve (FCV) flight rationale, ahead of the ultimate launch date decision at Friday’s Flight Readiness Review (FRR).

STS-119: NASA assess contingency launch dates up to March 17

Several options, including a reduced mission duration with only one EVA, are being considered as a contingency to ensuring STS-119 launches in March – prior to the Soyuz cut out.
