STS-119′s opening launch attempt has been scrubbed until Sunday, March 15,, following a LH2 leak during tanking. The leak related to a carrier plate that is attached to the intertank area of the ET, with attempts to cycle the associated valve to reduce the leak to acceptable proving to be unsuccessful.

Engineers are currently working no serious issues with the Discovery, as the Mission Management Team (MMT) sailed through L-2 ahead of STS-119′s opening launch attempt on Wednesday. The main topic of conversation related to an issue with Discovery’s OMS (Orbital Maneuvering System) Engine Gimbal Controller during her previous flight, STS-124.

Following the Flight Readiness Review (FRR) approval for launch, and the arrival of the STS-119 crew, Discovery has entered the launch countdown (S0007) at 7pm local time Sunday evening. The three day countdown is targeting a 9:20pm launch of Discovery on Wednesday evening.

The Delta II launch team at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station have launched NASA’s new Kepler observatory, a telescope designed to search for Earth-like terrestrial planets in the Cygnus and Lyra constellations. The initial three and half year mission launched at 10:49pm. EST from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

As expected, the Flight Readiness Review (FRR) has cleared Discovery to target a launch at 9:20pm on March 11, following a final review of the Flow Control Valve (FCV) flight rationale. One constraint – relating to the left SRB (Solid Rocket Booster) Range Safety System – will be worked over the weekend.

Lockheed Martin have recommended a switch of a 8Mbs Phased array on its Communications and Tracking (C&T) system to a combination phased array S-Band at low data rates with a High Gain Antenna – called Hybrid “Lite” – due to Orion’s mass and power issues.
